I need a distinction between VIDEO games (interactable videos with fail cases so it’s a game in the end but barely) and video GAMES (games you can see and not imagine, like basketball: no story, no progression, just rule based win/lose thing)

I think you’re looking for “genres”, the problem isn’t the term “video games”.

So as a customer my selection process is shorter. The label “Video game” is getting too big that it’s becoming useless. Imagine all the citrus fruits were called citrus fruits. I mean yeah but I wanna know if I’m buying an orange or a lemon, I like both but not in the same situation.

edit: I couldn’t stop thinking about the fruits: Citrus with sugar elements, Aroma driven Citrus

You’re just looking for genres. Your comment is a little like saying “when I want to listen to music, I don’t want acoustic guitar. That instrument shouldn’t be called music.”

But all citrus fruits are called citrus fruit. And they also have a different name each. And they get classified at different levels depending on need. Imaginary somebody tells me “they don’t like fruit because they ate an apricot and it tasted bad” and I say “but have you tried a Jaffa orange from north Palestine from the farm of <name here>, because that is different from an apricot”. No I’ll say “apricots are stone fruit and maybe you should try a citrus fruit before you judge all fruit.” But I wouldn’t say “maybe try ice cream that’s better than apricot”.

Do you think the term movie is bad? Or the term Music? Or the term Food? If you buy videogames solely on the fact that it says video game on the box then that is your problem and not that of the word.

Genres don’t tell me how much of a game is cutscenes and how much of the game is controlled by inputs. I guess you can argue for more labels but then we’ll have labels too long that they need abbrevations (extra cognitive load for the reader) so why not a new word (the same congitive load)?

The genre for anything with a heavy cutscene amount is typically “Story rich”. Doesn’t tell you the ratio between cutscenes and action, but that’s messy to measure anyways.

If you wanna get pedantic and actually measure that ratio, you could start with a new kind of genre with something like 60S40A for 60% story 40% action and see if there’d be enough people who cares enough to use the same labelling.

              Otherwise, read some reviews?

I loved the fight mechanics and I’m sure there was a good story in there if I cared but one thing that really grinded my gears was the goddamn cutscenes. Not only that but the incessant cut scene that leads into another cut scene that leads into another cut scene. Seriously I spent half the game skipping cut scenes.

Could be worse, could be a marathon run of the Metal Gear series with a ban on skipping cutscenes. Also the fuck did you expect from an aggressively French JRPG style game, FFS JRPGs are defined by their cutscenes.

Outside of America many countries have a strong sense of pride especially when something is overtly representing them and their culture.

As a Canadian if they made this game with hockey and toques I’d damn well expect the prime minister to applaud them when they won game of the year too.

Macron always has a knack to try to use things popular with younger people to score political gains. Infamously with the ZEvent, for instance.

It is now traditional for them to answer with “Shut your mouth Macron, this isn’t about you”.

Compared to dictators (or wannabe), I get that Macron seems attractive. But he’s proven to be pro-rich (taxes on the rich have been drastically cut under Macron) and anti-democratic (he’s ignored the result of the last election and nominated a plethora of prime ministers from parties who lost).

Honestly, I think knowing might help get through chapter 1. You know something’s up almost immediately, but they drag the mystery out way too long for my patience, where I felt like I was being fucked around with and having my time wasted. I would have dropped it if not for my partner insisting I’d like it, and the rest of the story did end up being worth it.

It does have a lot of replay value because the gameplay loop is tight, and the foreshadowing work is so outstandingly tight that every in-game conversation has a second layer of meaning once you know the story twists.

Also they added a photo mode and I kinda wanna do a NG+ just for that.

English Esquie is one of the most delightful things I’ve ever had the joy of experiencing. He’s voiced by the same person in both, but in French he just sounds French. In English he gets to have a French accent. Every character with a French accent is at odds with the main cast in a way that’s very flavorful. It just makes all the Frenchness really pop, like mixing sweet and salty.

Nope, even tho the game is french, the original is English and French is a dub. They even splurged for well known/good english voice actors. But french dub is also good, so you can go for it if you want. Try both for a few minutes and decide which one you want, I guess?

Akshully both are dubs, but the script and mocap sessions were done in English. On top of that the French dub was outsourced and the game director and lead writer weren’t in the studio like for the English dub, and it shows IMO. Some French lines clearly don’t have the same level of direction as the “canonical” dub.

However I will say it’s still a better dub than most French dubs. I’d argue the bar is on the floor but the francophone dubbing lobby would draw and quarter me for holding such heretic opinions.

That’s a shame, because both Plague Tale games, as well as E33 might (could) sound much better in French, but I can’t get past the way VA is done when compared to their English counterpart.

The English VA is really good and if you don’t speak French you will miss some characterizing lines. Combat barks and such aren’t subtitled, and neither is what little passive chatter between NPCs there is.

It’s only because we’re used to shit dub, it’s extremely rare to have a legit good dub (there’s a whole legit institutional problem there). If you can’t keep up with English dub, it’s good enough, but you’re still missing out a lot with Serkis, Cox, English that the French version can’t match. No one’s winning any award.

For me it’s not about winning an award but immersion. Hell, french dub is a so small market compared to english that it could explain why it’s not even taken into account for awards.

But on the music side, know that Expedition 33 has different ending musics in french and english, and even though I listen to a lot of english songs, the french one is so far better (“Aux lendemains non écrits”). The singer is simply more fluid in french than she is in english, or, I don’t know, but I simply can’t stand the english one compared to it. The meaning communicated through the words is not the same either.

Anyway, the important thing is that each of us finds ourselves satisfied with what they did :)

Aux lendemains non écrits is sung in French even with English dubs. There are some songs that have an alternate version where the language changes, so I’m not sure if there is an English version of that one playing somewhere else.
