Yeah, that one’s always bothered me too. I think the difference in meaning from colloquial “implication” and logical “material implication” are also involved in the raven paradox.

So the statement that “all ravens are black” can be taken as “if RAVEN then BLACK”. Is this statement true? If you see a black raven then trivially yes, if you see a white raven then trivially false (via counter example).

However if you see a non-raven, it is evidence for the truth of the statement because it doesn’t go against it: not-ravens being black-or-not-black both reduce the universe of possible objects without proving not-black-ravens exist.

Or something like that, I think it’s stupid too. Trinary logic can adopt a more sensible (IMHO) definition of implication that makes A being false always lead to the third value (usually defined as indeterminate or neither-true-nor-false).

Preservation, while perhaps idealistic, is about keeping every version that we can. Doom is a great example. Because Carmac released the source code, source ports have proliferated. That means anyone can play the original Doom on just about any machine. Varying degrees of accuracy to the original DOS release exist thanks to ports like Chocolate Doom, GZDoom, Eternity Engine, et al. As do varying degrees of accuracy to Doom 95, the Windows 95 rerelease. Or to the version running on Xbox packed in with Doom 3.

Ports cover the engine, but we also have an archive of all the doom.wad files, the contents. We have demo and prototype versions. The dos release. Officially patched versions. The win95 release. The Xbox release.

But a preservationist also wants the original Bethesda Unity release, wad and engine. The Kex release with the new engine and new episodes. Neither of those Bethesda engines needs to exist but why not keep them too? They’re a part of the Doom legacy, an ongoing chapter in the endless story of Doom.

Its good that in this community we’ve gotten to preserve so much. It keeps the history of one of the most important video games alive and relevant. It keeps the game itself relevant. Without the original source release, there’s no GZDoom and there’s probably no Bethesda rereleases. The impact that source release had on the gaming community, gaming as an industry, modding and indie gaming, is incalculable.

That Crysis–also a landmark game in its own time–deserves any less is laughable. The original release of the game should always be present and available: as an artifact of its time, as a fine game in its own right, and as a piece of living history that can be stood up against its remakes, sequels, and the games it inspired.

The need for corporate-funded servers is killing video sites, mod sites, emulators, streaming, libraries, and so much more. Even the “self-hosted” crowd is like 90% dependent on cloud-hosting companies.

More realistic versions:

Waterfall: the car is “finished” at the end, but replace the engine with a huge roaring fire. The Dev team continues to put the engine fire out and build the engine for 3x the original project duration.

Agile: replace the cute scooter and bicycle with the partial car graphics from Waterfall, but mount a uniccyle seat and then a park bench on top of the partially built car.

AI: the whole thing should always be on fire, and have several spies from different countries taking pictures of it constantly.

Yeah, I’m excited for this to be documented. I got burned on Wrath: Aeon of Ruin by this. Fun game but it only has checkpoint saves. You can make checkpoints (from a limited pool) when you want, but only to respawn from if you die. If you turn the game off, it’s back to the beginning of the zone. And each zone (which is basically a boomer shooter mission) can be multiple hours long.

Its basically unplayable for me because I have to clear out an afternoon to beat the whole level in one sitting.

It’s amazing how much still gets through, but at least I’m not scrolling past a dozen “news” stories between every meme or comic post.

If you’re a developer then you can also search “$MyFavDevEnv use local ai ollama” to find guides on setting up. I’m using Continue extension for VS Codium (or Code) but there’s easy to use modules for Vim and Emacs and probably everything else as well.

The main problem is leveling your expectations. The full Deepseek is a 671b (that’s billions of parameters) and the model weights (the thing you download when you pull an AI) are 404GB in size. You need so much RAM available to run one of those.

They make distilled models though, which are much smaller but still useful. The 14b is 9GB and runs fine with only 16GB of ram. They obviously aren’t as impressive as the cloud hosted big versions though.

It’s an untenable situation because its so much bigger than the tech world and open source. FOSS fundamentally works on a communal model: everyone needs lots of software, no one can hope to write it all themselves, so what if we distributed the labor out among the community so that everyone can work on some things important to them and the whole community benefits.

Then, capitalist businesses entered the picture and began using more and more open software as backbone for their enterprises. Government entanglements further complicate the picture, but fundamentally the capitalist mindset is incapable of building or maintaining our current technological base. It isn’t capable of maintaining or building our infrastructure either: almost all of that was built on government subsidies, socialism.

And now that vulture capitalism is the law of the land, everything is falling apart because there’s no more “slack” in the system where people can engage in personal socialism on projects like FLOSS, every bit of our time is being stolen to pad the numbers of capitalists.

This bleeds over into attitude as well. Every entitled user who thinks their personal issue is more important than any other concern is a trump or musk in miniature, believing that the the blowhard bravado of our current government is a model for forcing work to get done rather than a death spiral there’s no pulling out of.
