All the commenters suggesting that Proton is just a company and would always give in to legal requests and all other companies and any email provider would do the same, here’s some more to add. Yesterday I saw a now invalid toot comment from ProtonPrivacy on Mastodon Social where they wrote that it was Apple who was to blame and that Proton gave the recovery email address only because this was a case of a terrorism suspect suggesting that if that (terrorism) was not the case they would not have given in to the request. Today their comment sadly gives a 404 error. Searching a bit further this article comes up mentioning Proton and Wire :

And if that’s the case, should I just always use a VPN? And furthermore, shouldn’t you have always used a VPN prior to this anyways?

No idea about these USA specific things but always using a VPN would mean that you need to trust your VPN provider more than your ISP and your government. There is only one commercial VPN provider that I trust and one non commercial one. But then there is Tor, and the slower i2p. You also have to take into account that VPN blocking appears to be increasing. For all kind of shopping on-line and filling in forms for government related things (Things like let’s say e.g. request money support for a wheel chair) I cannot use VPN because they’re blocked or worse : time out. And I found out that lemmy.world likes to block Tor and VPN for posting and uploads. Reading is allowed though. So all in all you have no smooth sailing guaranteed.

When I first heard of Beeper I thought it was interesting. But reading later that they were buying really old iPhones to jail break them for bridging with iMessage I had some doubts. Now they’re bought by the Wordpress people, who also bought Tumblr, and apparently selling user data to AI.. And from what I’ve read about bridges there is no E2EE with Matrix (what Beeper seems to use) to Signal bridge.

That’s really great news, and hopefully an inspiration for other companies to follow suit. Tearing the Google email monopoly into smaller pieces bit by bit :)

Agreed on using Firefox/LibreWolf and uBlock Origin, I love that combination. I think the thing is that Google Chrome is much faster than Firefox on Android phones (I don’t mind, I hardly ever use mobile to browse), and long time habits can be hard to break for some people.
