  • They are UNIX systems, they don’t need an entire team to be managed once installed and running.

I’m only half joking. It’s not UNIX but I’ve been working with “legacy” systems like IBM i mainframes, and those things don’t need much to run. Sure, you have to update the system and the software once every few months, manage backups, role switches, etc., but it can mostly be done by a few people. But yeah, systems like this were (are) insanely expensive so most of his budget probably went there.

  • I don’t have a house and my apartment is owned by a billion dollar company. If I had a house, it wouldn’t be mine and I would be defending the mortgage/property of the bank. Home is where the heart is. The rest is a piece of land owned by the system. I’ve already left my native region because I’ve been told to leave if I didn’t like it there.

My loved ones are all conservatives and/or capitalists that would vote for the same shit Republicans are doing, while denying it. Last election, the country would have voted for Conservatives if it were not for the orange turd threatening us.

The Québecois were conquered centuries ago by the English and oppressed into submission so they would be forced into this country. And to this day, we still even can’t have an agreement on the constitution. We are still into a constitutional impasse and the country risks imploding and threatens the other parts to either agree or be kicked out, every time we’re talking about it, to the point that we’re just ignoring it.

I don’t think any of this is worth helping the military industrial complex into getting exactly what it’s been wanting for the last decades.

  • You too can help defend our capitalist country where housing is unaffordable to most people and where natural resources are exploited to profit multinational corporations.

It’s your choice. It’s either defending neoliberalism by helping to kill other poor people also convinced they are defending their country by invading another, or their fascism.

Meanwhile the rich will watch the poor fight and kill each others with weapons that they sold them.

I seriously think individuals should be prepared for general catastrophic events, but I’m personally not willing to “defend” this land that is not mine in the first place.

Being a subject of capitalistic country A instead of capitalistic country Z is not worth helping an organization that has the goal of killing other humans. Even if it’s just helping with driving a truck, or with the tech, it’s indirectly assisting those that will do the killing.

Road traffic also kills more than a million people every year, and it’s mostly powered by fossil fuel transported by pipelines.

Like, don’t worry, the construction of pipelines is very gentle on the ecology. It’s spewing black death at the end but don’t mind that.

What’s next? We won’t believe how oil fields in Alberta are taking care of the environment and are as clean as clean coal?

However clean and ecologically friendly the construction of the pipeline is, the exploitation of the oil sands itself is causing ecological harm. The product it transports and sells is also causing ecological harm.

  • As someone trying to live without a car, this is very disappointing to see, if not expected. Alto looks like any other new shiny highway announcement. I understand very well that this is badly needed, but beyond that, there’s apparently no federal (nor provincial in my case) plan to have any kind of coherent transit system/network.

I could live with the delays and late trains but Via Rail’s pricing scheme is literally discouraging people from taking the train. And that’s if there are still trains (or even coaches). It’s impossible to go in lots of cities without a car now, when it wasn’t before. The town where I grew up was founded mainly by the Grand Trunk, had passenger trains for more than a century, but they were discontinued in the mid 90ies, by Paul Martin and the Liberals.

Meanwhile I’m watching videos about “rail route reactivation” and renewal in Germany. From the perspective of someone without a car, this is bad. It seems like the federal government wants people like me to abandon trains/buses/bikes and drive a car everywhere.

I wish Alto wasn’t the new shiny thing where they’d dump all the money while forgetting about what’s left of the current crumbling infrastructure. I’ve lived more than two decades without a car but by the time Alto is finished, I’ll probably own one because every other coach, train, and transit service will have been cut.

  • There’s always more than one but the others are busy chasing clients to put them into debt without their knowledge.

That’s how I got one of their outrageously high interest MasterCard. They approach clients in the aisle, ask if they would like to save on their purchases, then ask a few personal questions, and and tell you that you’re approved!

The moment you realize they are making a credit card request on your behalf, it’s already too late. They told me I could just cancel the card afterwards.

I really despise how they are trying very hard to put their clients into debt.

  • It’s just what I’ve used most outside of Canada. But yeah, not just DB. We’re missing a lot of the “train culture” present in Germany and other rich countries, and that is reflected in local and political will.

Like, as much as there is also a thriving car culture in Germany, and the reputation of DB (also somewhat justified), there’s actually more than a handful of people that thinks having passenger trains in their towns and cities is a necessity. And there’s even actions taken to reopen some lines that were previously closed! YouTube is sometimes suggesting me videos of train route reactivation in Germany, and it’s incredible to see the will of the people to have a passenger train back in their villages, and the positive(!) comments.

Meanwhile in Canada any attempt at maintaining current rail service, let alone reviving passenger trains in smaller towns, or even cities, will be met with apathy by most people.

  • Huh? I’m not sure if you’re serious but I can give it a try.

Short answer : The tracks to Lévis have been removed decades ago and it’s now a bike path.

Cynical answer: There are still tracks close enough to the city that a connection and new station could be built. However Via Rail is required to be profitable so it wouldn’t happen. It’s North America, just use a car (electric)!

Car-less person answer: You kind of can. Take a train to Québec City and use the ferry to Lévis.

But to me the bigger rhetorical question is, why the hell doesn’t the Québec region have any kind of commuter trains.
