I think it’s just a really good Windows-like. It uses a modified GNOME that looks pretty good. Though as a KDE fangirl, I probably wouldn’t be able to see it as anything other than GNOME. (◕દ◕)

It’s based on Ubuntu, so I’m sure support is good and breakage is infrequent.

It also looks like you can pay $50 and get access to the pro version, which can mimic any of the major desktops and also lets you use their exclusive creative suite. If that’s any good, it’s no wonder people are flocking to it. Linux is still kinda mid for creatives.

With how much talk of breaking your install goes around, I assumed it would be a challenge. I run pacman -Syu almost every time I update lmao.

Some people are enthusiasts that want to take the training wheels off and challenge themselves. I use CachyOS, which is Arch-based, because it thrashes everything else almost every time in speed tests. Thus far, it hasn’t proven to be more complicated than the Debian-based distros I’ve used. I also wasn’t expecting better features in Arch with certain programs. Being able to get the absolute newest version of a package at all times has proven to be much more useful to me than detrimental.

I really love CachyOS. It’s so fast. I’ve been seeing lots of reports of performance issues in The Outer Worlds 2, and I’ve gotta say I’m not experiencing any of that.

Just make sure you familiarize yourself with some of the quirks of Arch, such as why you might want to use a program like Timeshift for backups, or the risks of the AUR.

Also, get a flash drive and back up your important files, just in case. I have done full system upgrades every time I upgrade, and I haven’t had issues with my system yet. But with Arch, you gotta be careful.

Pop!_OS and CachyOS are the two I always recommend for people with nVidia. The best option for Linux, quite frankly, is to switch to AMD. However, both of those should be preconfigured for your GPU. I’ve been loving CachyOS, and my friend with nVidia has been too.

I just wanted something new, and Fedora was too similar to Ubuntu under the hood. I don’t know if I’m going to look back from Arch-based. Maybe when I break my install lol.

I found out about Pop!_OS when doing research for gaming on Linux. It’s maintained by a private company, and they invest a lot of time into keeping their drivers up-to-date. AFAIK it’s still one of the best choices if you have Nvidia cards, because they have a separate ISO just for Nvidia machines.

For a short time, I used Kubuntu because I love KDE Plasma. I had been wanting to use Plasma again, and I kinda wanted to try a non-Debian/Ubuntu-based distro. That’s when I stumbled upon CachyOS, and I don’t think I’m switching to another distro for a while.

CachyOS is Arch-based, with a super-easy install. They have their own version of the kernel, optimized for gaming. It really is fast, too. Not only does it beat Windows in most speed tests, but it beats pretty much every other distro as well. If you like Arch, I highly recommend CachyOS to keep some of the basic stuff optimized while you tinker with your system.

I had heard it was ready for gaming, and I wanted to see for myself. It wasn’t, at the time, but I used it for a few months before I switched back to Windows for a bit. Then, after another year on Windows, I gave Pop!_OS a chance. That sent me on a full spiral into distro hopping, and I’m on CachyOS now - not switching from Linux again.

Pop!_OS was a lifesaver when I was learning Linux. You can just look up Ubuntu related questions for tech support, the graphics drivers are preconfigured, and the interface is easy to use.

I’m on CachyOS with KDE now, but I highly recommend Pop! for a first-timer not looking to tinker.

Also, with ProtonTricks you can still mod stuff. It’s not perfect, but there’s a version of Mod Organizer 2 for Linux ;P
